Where Were You?

Real World 25

Sooo, tomorrow is the VA casting call for Real World Season 25, they still haven't released where it is going to be but... I don't even care where it is! I have wanted to be on The Real World since I saw Real World Las Vegas! *screams* I don't watch any other reality TV show cause I feel like the are all scripted! Real World is my DRRREEEAAAMMM!!! I need sooo much support! I want this sooo bad!

HBCU vs Predominately White Campus Life

So I attend Norfolk State University, in Norfolk, VA. NSU is a HBCU. Around the corner there is a predominately white university, Old Dominion University. One day was week I was on ODU campus and I really had to look around and I asked myself, "Where do they get all this money from?" My mom said they probably have a lot of alumni support that most HBCU's don't have... So I called up to ODU and NSU to get numbers on how much financial support each receives annually and neither said they were able to get the answer... I don't know, it just seems a little fishy to me... I'll come back with the pics on Monday

Tips From Pamela Jones

Last Wednesday I had the privilege to hear from Portsmouth native, NSU 2008 graduate, Pamela Jones and she spoke to us about the tips to being a successful mass communication major in and out of school. She started off in school joking around all the time and active on the yard in many organizations on campus. She is now located in New York making more money then she would in Virginia stating “sometimes you gotta leave out to bring back in.”

In 2006 she got picked to go on a mass communication trip to New York and ran into MTV and ended up on TRL dancing to Beyonce and got invited back the next day. Her whole motive was, “what possibilities do you have just jumping up.” She ended up getting an internship in New York and is still interning there.

Since she got serious about her future she considers herself a grinder. While all her friends were in Miami for spring break she was in New York staying in a hostile, it was the scariest experience in her life but anything to get your hands on, anything to get contacts of the people you need to know was her reasoning. Don’t break the law, but make it work. Stay after the movie and watch the end credits, get the cast caller name, call the studios, get their extension and work it out.

Pamela stressed how we needed to take advantage of the resources provided at school, you may have to merge your personal life and school, stop looking at the little picture and look at things in the long run. You’re going to fail, they will tell you no, but you have to have a quick turnaround. “You never know the avenues you can take, always have an open ear to what’s out there.”

She also emphasized how important our resume, image, and networking is. The energy put into that one piece of paper will take you so far. “GRIND, be humble, know that no one owes you anything, be creative, you really have to stand out, what does your personality have to offer?” You have to talk to your professors and faculty, build a relationship so that you can come back and have doors opened. She left us all with a statement of motivation, “If you don’t take any actions, then you have no room to complain about anything.”

Independent Party

Today I had the privilege to hear from Erick T. Sadler, the independent candidate for the US House of Representatives forth district of Virginia, in my politics class. He shined the light on the political parties and open my eyes to the world of politics. He said corruption of the government circulates around money. A lot of money is floating around and Independent candidates usually don't get the lime light because they don't have the money. He is neither republican or democrat, he is himself, and he is working for the American agenda, not the agenda of a party.

He quoted some lines from George Washington's Farewell Address and summed it up saying that the government has done everything that Washington predicted would happen years ago. Washington was not a fan of political parties because he felt they would change laws to meet their needs and not the people of America.

I asked him how he felt about same-sex marriages. His response was government puts their nose in too many personal issues and relations. Everyone has an opinion but when one mans opinion effects another mans opinion negatively, it needs to stop. All men were created equal and no one should push their opinion on other's people lifestyles.

When another student asked how he felt about the don't ask don't tell policy he felt it was a shame that people want to serve for their country but they are denied because of their sexual orientation. He feels like if open gays are allowed into the military their should also be protection laws passed to keep people from discriminating against them in the military.

He is an independent party and like said above he does not receive a lot of finical support. I needs members on his campaign. He also printed his business cards recycled paper so it shows he's going green!! Let's Support our independent candidates.

LGBT Prom 2010

The public 09-10 school year is winding down. For high school seniors Prom Time is around the corner. You know there had to be some LGBT members stirring up some issues. Constance had been openly gay since middle school, now her high school prom canceled their prom because she wanted to her female date to the prom. And Derrick decided he wanted to take his male date to prom, school approved, parents didn't and they kicked him out of their home. My applause goes to these two individuals for standing up and expressing themselves not caring what anybody had to say.

And this was my inspiration. Why does the open LGBT community carry someone of the opposite sex to their prom? So I went around and asked, and unsurprisingly a lot of LGBT members had the same answers. I broke down my response by their "labels."

• Studs

Most studs took boys to their prom to satisfy their parents, the male they took was either their brother or their best friend, or a guy they promised years ago, so they kept their promise. Other studs took their girlfriends, because they "didn't feel comfortable" "wanted my girl on my arm" "I was the only stud in the school so everybody already knew the deal"

• Fems

Most of the fems were not open about their orientation in high school so they took a boy. Some comments made were "I was openly bisexual... I brought a boy because I wanted to go thru with traditions... I wanted a boy in my pictures." Another fem went to prom with a boy but left and spent the night with her girlfriend. In my case, I was open, everybody knew I was gay... But i still took a boy and to this day I still don't know why, I never even had intentions of taking a girl... Hmm

• Males

Most guys took their best friend because they were single and didn't want to just take any old guy to prom, but some guys took their male dates to the prom and did not think twice about what anybody had to say about it. A couple of 2010 seniors said they were taking girls only because their mothers wanted them to and they would hate to disappoint their mothers...

Some people that I asked didn't reply and I believe it was because they were ashamed that they took a member of the opposite sex just to please other people. And for those people, I have nothing but love for you. But for my people that took members of the same sex you get a standing ovation!!!

HIS Voice

As I walked in the lobby of my doctor’s office I heard an elder man speaking to a woman about God, he said one thing in particular that caught my ears, “God can get everybody to obey Him except for humans.” When I heard this I saved it to the notepad in my phone because I felt the inspiration behind it.

James 1: 19 say “… you must be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.” Later on that day I was sitting in my Mass Communication class and my teacher said, “Do you know the difference between listening and hearing, hearing is experiencing the sound, while listening is comprehending what you heard.”

Noah told the people get their lives together because the rain was coming, they ignored him, but those animals followed him onto that boat. Jesus even had control over the water on the sea, He told it to be still and that it did. If humans are supposed to be the smartest beings on earth, why is it that animals obey God’s word, when humans just ignore it?

James 1:22 goes on to say “Don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise you are fooling yourself. God talks to us in so many ways, thru the TV, the radio, and even strangers in the doctor’s office. But if we don’t listen to what He is saying and obey His word, we are wasting our sense of hearing.
